Getting to know Dr. Afshan Mohamedali

I am a NY, NJ, and DC licensed clinical psychologist, supervisor, and doctoral professor with a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University, a Master's in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University, and a Bachelor's from Montclair State University. I work with individual adults and couples experiencing distress due to fluctuations in mood, changing life circumstances, difficult relationships, and uncertain identity. Given my own multicultural identity, I approach every patient with compassion and curiosity for their experiences, encouraging those I work with to practice the same. I find that the most successful therapy is a result of healthy collaboration, trust, and creating a safe space to do the work.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I know from firsthand experience how fragmented we can feel without reflection and self-discovery. And sometimes, we engage in the same cycles repeatedly that prevent us from living more authentically. I work with individuals through weekly therapy sessions to identify these cycles and more importantly, decide if and where to disrupt them to impact positive change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I typically work with individuals over a long period of time. The start of therapy is usually a time to uncover recurring themes, identify how you might be contributing to them, and alleviate overall acute distress. Afterward, the work takes on the focus of implementing change and tracking progress. It also serves as a space for even deeper reflection and insight as you increasingly discover and understand yourself. Some therapy experiences are shorter, though, and are just for a specific time in your life. Given the focus on you, you decide when you’re ready for our work to come to an end. We will use the last few sessions together to review what we’ve both learned and harness the excitement for your future.

More information on payments and coverage

I am an out-of-network provider with most insurance companies. Many insurance plans have out of network benefits that would help cover a significant amount of your session costs with me. My office can help in verifying your coverage to give you a better sense of the cost of therapy before we schedule a first session. This helps so that you have a better sense of what treatment costs would look like before making your decision to pursue working with me. My office can also submit insurance claims on your behalf at no additional cost, ensuring direct reimbursement to you. Feel free to contact me should you have any questions. I’d be happy to walk you through the process.

I have been looking for a therapist who would "get me" and help me process some residual trauma from many years ago and have gone through quite a few with no luck. I think my search is finally over. Dr. M is the best therapist out there! She is kind, compassionate, insightful, sensitive to my cultural background and very knowledgable. I can't recommend her enough!
I saw Dr. Mohamedali last year when I was going through a very rough time in my life. Our work together has made me be better and more able to cope with these challenges. She helped me realize and channel traits I didn't even know I had.
She is amazing! She is also very culturally competent which was very important to me given the negative experiences I had with my past three therapists. I cannot recommend her enough!
Dr. Mohamedali is the best in her field. By far!! I have seen multiple therapists over the years but never felt that therapy was "helping". Dr. Mohamedali has changed that for me and I am very grateful to have found her.

Excellent therapist!
I didn’t realize why it was so important to click with a therapist until I started working with Dr. Mohamedali. She is so real in our sessions and it’s truly helped me feel more comfortable and open up. I love that she is so present and remembers the littlest of things I tell her. She is great at helping me see patterns I hadn’t seen before. I highly recommend going to see her to manage your anxiety and feel better overall!
Definitely the best therapist around! Our sessions have greatly helped me understand myself better and be my best in my relationships with everyone around me.
I have seen multiple therapists on and off over the past 20 years. Dr. Mohamedali is by far the best one I have had! She is professional yet very relatable and has helped me a great deal over the past several months of working together.
Dr. Mohamedali came highly recommended to me when I was going through a very stressful phase last year. She did disappoint and more than surpassed those expectations. She is compassionate, incredibly personable, and the insight she offers during sessions blow me away every time. Seeing her has been the best decision I have made for my mental health!
