Getting to know Dr. Alexander Isaac

I practice individual psychodynamic psychotherapy combined with medication management. Based on my training and experience, split treatment does not provide adequate time or knowledge for optimal care. I tailor therapy to meet each patient's needs; for example, less complex problems may require briefer therapies. I earned my Doctor of Medicine from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. I completed my residency at the University of Maryland and a fellowship in psychosomatic medicine at Georgetown University Hospital. I have a subspecialization in psychosomatic medicine, focusing on conditions involving both psychiatric and general medical issues. I am an assistant professor at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and a clinical instructor at both Georgetown and George Washington University Schools of Medicine. A routine visit with me includes psychotherapy and medication management lasting 50 minutes. For medication management appointments, please select "medication review." For first-time appointments, please choose "psychiatry consultation."

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is thoughtful but candid and direct. I prefer practical solutions to predictable problems, and nuanced approaches to complex problems. I have 20 years of experience in a very wide range of clinical settings and research. Collaboration, transparency, flexibility, and open mindedness are fundamentals in my practice. I have worked closely with professional needs unique to the Washington ecosystem and therefore exercise extreme caution to insure confidentiality and boundaries.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Medication management sessions are straight forward, 30 minutes, symptom oriented, and problem focussed. Therapy sessions are 50 minutes, more open ended, and discursive. Patients can expect me to be more active and engaged in guiding the therapy than in the traditional analytic model, this it is. ore conversational. The therapy session also includes the management of the medication and symptom relief. Patient needs dictate my approach. My technique is transference based, therefore "here and now" experiences are encouraged in the longer therapies. My theoretical background is bio-psycho-social, but I strongly emphasize the interpersonal and developmental aspects of human psychology.
