Psychologist
4425 N Granite Reef Rd, Scottsdale, AZ
Adolescents and adults navigating their faith and sexuality (LGBTQ+ affirming), anxiety, depression, interpersonal challenges, trauma, pregnancy/postpartum, family of origin concerns, identity development, and general life stressors would particular enjoy working with me. Multicultural couples and families navigating culture clashes, faith transitions, and sexual and intergenerational trauma, especially for BIPOC populations, are treatment specialties. Psychological assessment for diagnostic clarification (e.g., autism for teens and adults, ADHD, etc.), Independent Medical Evaluations (IME) for worker’s compensation, preemployment for first responders, and fitness-for-duty-evaluations are also offered. Approaching patients with cultural humility is a core value at Malak Psychology honoring who you are, your ancestors, and the land we occupy. While conducting psychotherapy through Malak Psychology serving Arizona and PSYPACT state residents, Dr. Malak is also contracted with Josi Health and Loyal Source Government Agency, conducting autism and Veteran disability evaluations. As a licensed clinician, I worked with police officers and first responders supporting them through critical incidents, life transitions, and other traumas, and I conducted preemployment evaluations. After graduating with my PsyD from Midwestern University in 2020, I completed my postdoctoral residency at Wooten & Associates gaining specialized training treating perinatal patients with substance use disorders and consultation. Prior to graduation, I received extensive training integrating spirituality into psychotherapy with students at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. I completed forensic psychotherapy and assessment training at Buwalda Psychological Services and sex offender treatment training at Family Transitions. I also supported people with serious mental illnesses and substance use disorders at Southwest Behavioral & Health Services.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (AZ #5464 and PSYPACT#11395) with a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.), I provide individual, group, family, and couples therapy. Malak Psychology also trains practicum students obtaining their psychology doctorates from universities throughout Arizona. I am particularly attuned to supporting multicultural people, faith transitions, and sexual trauma. My approach is evidence-based, collaborative, and individualized. You will experience evidence-based, multimodal techniques from cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), cognitive processing therapy (CPT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), family systems, and somatic experiencing (SE). Coordinating care with other health professionals, religious leaders, schools, lawyers, and/or families when necessary ensures the most adequate, research-informed care possible. While research is important, your uniqueness is not always expressed in research. Hence, I blend modalities, including from Indigenous Knowledge Systems/decolonial frameworks, to suit your needs. Assessments at Malak Psychology are conducted with cultural sensitivity to ensure accurate diagnoses and access to evidence-based treatment. In some cases, assessments may also be needed following workplace injuries, including for medical retirement evaluations in fields such as the military, first responders (e.g., police and firefighters), and beyond. Currently, Malak Psychology is training a doctoral psychology student to learn how to conduct assessments. However, your comfort is our top priority, and you have the right to decline a student’s involvement at any time. Your informed consent is essential. You may withdraw your consent at any stage during the assessment or psychotherapy process. If at any point you feel Malak Psychology is not the right fit, we are happy to offer referrals to support you in finding the care that best meets your needs.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Your first session typically involves a clinical interview where Dr. Malak reviews confidentiality, practice policies, and explores your history and treatment goals. Most psychological assessments are currently conducted virtually and range from 4–8 hours which can be split into a few days. Cognitive, personality, and other psychological measures are administered, and this information is integrated with records and, when appropriate with a release of information, communication with other providers or family members to develop a holistic understanding. A feedback session and a written report are provided. These reports can support applications for disability, medical retirement, treatment planning, academic accommodations, and more. The full assessment process typically takes 1–2 months to complete. Psychotherapy also begins with a clinical interview, followed by the creation of a collaborative treatment plan. Sessions are scheduled regularly or intermittently, depending on your needs. It’s important to be in a private space or with people you’re comfortable sharing your mental health journey with (group therapy requires privacy). Babies and children are welcome in sessions, especially for postpartum patients, though having the hour to yourself may be beneficial. Therapy may include exploring your beliefs about yourself, others, and the world; role-playing; writing; drawing; movement; and mindfulness practices. These tools help process stressors through mind, body, and spirit, supporting processing trauma, grief, depression, anxiety, and beyond. Healing isn’t always linear — symptoms may intensify before improving, especially when addressing trauma. You're encouraged to move at your own pace and take breaks as needed. Group, couples, and family therapy involve exploring interpersonal dynamics, unspoken roles, and restoring system balance. Each modality offers unique benefits and risks, and Dr. Malak can help you determine the best fit.

  • Sliding scale: Offers lower out-of-pocket fees on an individual basis, typically based on your ability to pay

More information on payments and coverage

Dr. Malak likes to be very transparent about costs as therapy can be a large investment in the self. You can use a health savings account card, flexible spending account card, or pay out-of-pocket and receive a superbill to submit to your insurance for reimbursement. This process is also called out-of-network  (OON) services and reimbursement is not guaranteed. You may want to contact your insurance to see if this is a provided benefit. You can also check your insurance panel by calling your insurance or checking their online directory for in-network providers if cost is a barrier. Individual intakes are $225. Family and couples sessions are $250. Group rates are sliding scale, $44 | $77 | $111 with $111 being the full fee. Intakes are also the cost of a group session as many people choose group for the communal healing and/or lower cost than individual services. Please be aware that there is a 48 hour cancellation policy. Please inform Dr. Malak if you need to cancel before 48 hours. Although there are some exceptions (e.g., every patient gets one late cancel free a year), you would be charged the full for the session if the cancellation occurs after the 48 hour period. Groups are slightly different, and we will discuss it before you join as there is also a sliding scale cancellation policy.
