About Dr. Douglas Altchek
Dr. Altchek attended Quaker schools, Friends Seminary, Friends Academy, and the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature. He further diversified his education by studying medicine at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid Facultad de Medicina. He then trained in surgery and dermatology at Mount Sinai.
He is currently Clinical Professor of Dermatology and the archivist of the Department of Dermatology at Mount Sinai.
Dr. Altchek has taught dermatologic surgery at Mount Sinai for over 30 years. He practices out of the oldest continuous dermatology office in Manhattan, in operation since 1929, and is a member of the United Nations Medical Corps. He is frequently consulted in tropical dermatology. At one time, he had the largest Hansen’s disease practice in the city. Fluent in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, and Catalan, Dr. Altchek also reads Hebrew and Old English.
He has published a variety of papers and book chapters dealing with hair transplantation, skin tumors, eczema, and the history of dermatology. Several of his publications were in Spanish and Portuguese and have appeared in international publications and texts. He has lectured both in this country and abroad on subjects ranging from forensic dermatology to tropical dermatology.

I was impressed by the professionalism of the office staff and especially, Dr. Altchek. His bedside manner is great! He put me at ease, explained his diagnosis and listened to what I had to say, without having me feel rushed. I will definitely return!

Doctor was great and knowledgeable, but front desk was absolutely AWFUL which led me to cancel my follow-up appointment
They were like here’s your prescription I’m like can you call it in. They told me no so i text my pharmacy the prescription after i leave and they said they can’t fill it the doctor needs to call it in so i go back to the office and tell them that and they say ok but we’ll do it in an hour or 2 and i said why - they said we’re busy i said it takes 2 seconds they said no it doesn’t then they go what pharmacy so i verbally told them and they go ok we know that one np
Then i leave and they call me 5 mins later and say you didn’t fill out the pharmacy info on the patient form i said i literally just told you it and you know it and they go well that doesn’t help us bc then we have to spend time looking it up and finding the phone number
I feel bad bc the doctor was great but he should really consider getting a new front desk staff that actually cares about his patients

All the patients were angry, the office had issues and the staff was unfriendly. My appointment got rescheduled twice and then I still had to wait for an hour. The entire place is straight out of the 1930s. I was unhappy with the quality of care and results. Would not recommend even if you have no other option

The doctor was looking in a hurry and rush situation. Not a good listener. I don't know how knowledgeable he is but he doesn't show any sympathy or care about patients. Just want to sell you his brand of pricey medicine and get rid of you as soon as possible.
