Getting to know Dr. Frederick Starr

My eldest daughter Anna was born in 2001 and developed severe epilepsy no medication could control. In 2008, at age six, she passed away in her sleep from a fatal seizure. That unspeakable loss transformed my life and my calling. What began as a father’s desperate search to save his little girl became a lifelong mission to bring real hope to children and adults labeled “treatment-resistant.” As a licensed physician, I prescribe and manage medication when truly needed, but my expertise lies in patented, qEEG-guided neurofeedback and neuromodulation that retrain the brain at its source—often reducing or eliminating medications over time. I originated large-scale remote neurofeedback years before telehealth became mainstream, hold multiple U.S. patents, and was named one of the “Fifty Pioneers in Neurofeedback” by my peers. How we help you: In-office qEEG brain mapping in Hackensack, NJ (insurance-covered) Personalized remote neurofeedback you do at home (most insurance reimburses 50–80%—we verify for you) Responsible medication management with a focus on lowest effective doses Proven results with anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism, PTSD, migraines, TBI, seizures & more I’ve helped thousands worldwide—many told “nothing else can be done”—speak their first sentences, sleep through the night, return to school, feel joy again. If you or your child are stuck despite years of treatment, I understand that pain on the deepest level. There is still hope, and there are still options that work. Schedule your consultation today. Let’s write a new chapter—together. — Dr. Frederick Starr

What should a new client know about working with you?

We offer two neurofeedback delivery options so you can choose what works best for you and your insurance:• In-office neurofeedback (Hackensack, NJ): billed to insurance (most plans cover 50–100% as biofeedback/physical medicine codes). You come to the office 2–3 times per week.• At-home neurofeedback: self-pay only (insurance does not yet cover home-use equipment rental). More convenient for families who travel or live far away. The foundational qEEG brain map is performed in our Hackensack office-self-pay ($350). Some Insurance Providers cover diagnostic qEEG. Typical treatment course: 40 sessions for moderate–severe cases (many feel major improvement by session 20). Milder cases often finish in 20–30 sessions. I personally design and adjust every protocol. You’ll have direct messaging access to me plus scheduled video check-ins every 1–2 weeks. Medication management is included when needed. I continue, adjust, or safely taper psychiatric medications with the goal of lowest effective dose (or none) once the brain self-regulates. We happily treat children, teens, and adults. Kids usually love it—sessions feel like playing calming video games with their brain. Payment & insurance: We verify all benefits upfront, submit claims for in-office training, and provide superbills for possible partial home-training reimbursement. Deposits and session packages are non-refundable. 48-hour cancellation policy for in-office visits. Results are cumulative and generally permanent—the brain keeps the healthier patterns it learns. My practice exists because my daughter Anna lost her life to uncontrollable seizures in 2008. I will never stop fighting for the brains medicine alone couldn’t help. You deserve care that sees the whole person and never gives up.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I welcome two types of patients: Medication Management Only • 100% virtual • 30 min new-patient eval, 15–30 min follow-ups • All psychiatric medications prescribed responsibly (including controlled substances when appropriate and legally allowed via telehealth) • Specialty in treatment-resistant cases, polypharmacy clean-up, genetic testing, and gentle tapering • Most insurance accepted; copays only • Same-day/next-day urgent appointments often available Neurofeedback + Brain-Based Care (with or without meds) • Start: Book 30-min Zoom intake on ZocDoc • Step 1: 45-minute in-office qEEG brain map in Hackensack, NJ (self-pay; insurance does not cover diagnostic qEEG) • Step 2: I personally analyze your map, write a detailed report, and design your custom protocol • Step 3: Choose your training style - In-office neurofeedback (2–3 visits/week; insurance typically covers 50–100%) - At-home neurofeedback (self-pay; equipment shipped to you) • I review every session myself, adjust weekly, and stay in direct contact via messaging + regular video check-ins • Typical course: 40 sessions (4–6 months) for lasting change; progress proven by repeat qEEGs at session 20 and completion • Medication management/tapering included when desired Whether you need only thoughtful medication oversight or comprehensive brain retraining (or both). This practice exists because my daughter Anna lost her life to uncontrollable seizures in 2008; I will never stop fighting for the care medicine alone couldn’t provide. Ready for either path? Book your 30-minute Zoom intake on ZocDoc today.
