Getting to know Dr. Greg Friedman

Greetings. I am a warm and compassionate post-doctoral psychologist with a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Long Island University, Brooklyn. I provide individual therapy to late adolescents and adults. I have worked with people experiencing anxiety, depression, and conflicts at work, in their families, and intimate relationships. I also work with adults who have survived childhood neglect and emotional, sexual, and/or physical abuse. People come to me experiencing maladaptive and self-defeating behaviors, such as addictions and compulsions, that they hope to break free from, as well as those facing major life transitions and issues of identity, including low self-esteem, social stigma and bullying, and being othered in their families and society due to aspects of their identity. My first task in any therapy is to establish a safe, supportive, and compassionate relationship with you?one that allows us to explore what troubles you most so we can develop a deeper understanding of the core issues you are struggling with and discover the best paths forward in our work toward change, healing, and finding new ways to a more fulfilling, satisfying, and growthful life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My work is primarily based on a psychodynamic perspective. I also incorporate elements of cognitive-behavioral and dialectical-behavioral practices when well-suited for issues you bring into treatment. My approach is always collaborative. We will work together to explore the issues that have brought you to therapy and will proceed according to your needs, goals, and best practices in the profession. We might focus on current stressors, intense, overwhelming emotional states, negative relationship patterns, or self-defeating behaviors you would like to move past. Your experience is unique, and I aim to tailor a treatment that best suits you. I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Long Island University. I trained at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, working on inpatient and outpatient units with people of all ages, including older adults. I also trained at Baruch College Counseling Center, various community clinics, and psychiatric emergency rooms. I am well-trained to work with diverse populations in terms of race and ethnicity, gender, and sexual expression, as well as immigration status.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I will work with you to create a safe, compassionate, and trusting relationship. We may establish treatment goals that we will revisit and revise as our work progresses. We may focus on symptoms you are experiencing and find ways to cope with and decrease their frequency and severity. We may address self-defeating behaviors and relationship patterns to understand how to change them and develop healthier behaviors and patterns of relationships. We may confront barriers to growth that prevent you from reaching your life goals. We may work on new skills and coping strategies to better face life’s challenges. Whatever we do, we will work collaboratively. I hope that by working together, you can move toward a fuller, more satisfying life—one that allows for your growth and fulfillment, less encumbered by psychological symptoms and suffering. That all begins with your reaching out, and I deeply appreciate your faith in me to help you toward your goals and relief from psychological distress and suffering.
