About Dr. Huai Ming Phen
Dr. Huai Ming Phen, MBBS is an attending orthopaedic surgeon and Assistant Professor of orthopaedic surgery at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Phen specialises in orthopaedic trauma surgery, which focuses on caring for patients with any type of fracture or sprain involving the pelvis, arms (clavicle, shoulder, humerus, elbow, ulna, and radius), and legs (hip, femur, knee, tibia, fibula, ankle, talus, and calcaneus). Dr. Phen also addresses problems that may occur following fracture surgery, such as non-union, deformity, and infection.
He received his medical degree in 2016 from St. Bartholomew’s and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, United Kingdom, where he was awarded clinical distinction and the Top Performing Student in the Open Prizes Competition. He subsequently completed his orthopaedic surgery residency in 2022 at Emory University, where he was awarded the Residency Mentorship and Teaching Award, and Annual Research Symposium Best Presentation Award after developing an artificial intelligence algorithm that was able to accurately localise implants in the cervical spine. He completed his specialised orthopaedic trauma fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery in 2023.
Dr. Phen’s research areas of interest focus on the biomechanical advantages of implants for different fractures and the applications of artificial intelligence within fracture care. He is a member of several professional organizations including the Orthopaedic Trauma Association and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

doctor was not a good listener and likes to be biased based on the neighborhood of the office. you cannot be biased against your patients nor continue your evaluation when a patient is asking you to stop because they’re in pain.
the resident was much better at evaluating and didn’t continue when i asked her to stop bending my leg because of the pain, unlike dr. phen. hope this feedback is taken seriously

Doctor was very nice. I was seen by a student doctor initially who then reported to the doctor what he had observed. I probably met with the doctor for about four minutes total after waiting for two hours. Again, he is very nice and seems very knowledgeable but the wait time was surprising.

Dr Phen is an amazing doctor, very courteous, pleasant, knowledgeable and professional, he listened very carefully to all my concerns, i was so comfortable talking to him, he was very thorough explaining what was happening to me and the treatment plan that will be given, which was very reassuring.

The doctor was a poor listener and showed very little empathy. I had to repeat basic information multiple times and even then, it was clear they weren't listening. They offered very little insight into a plan for my care and seemed annoyed that I had question about my health. I have made attempts to contact the office since my appointment and they have not gotten back to me about important matters. Really disappointing, I wouldn't see this doctor again.

Dr. Phen was truly excellent. He analyzed my issue and he explained my physical problem to me in simple terms. What Dr. Phen said appeared logical and tracked with what I had experienced. He seemed quite knowledgeable. Although extremely elegant, he never looked down on me, as some doctors do. He also was humble in his expertise and recommended that I see a colleague who specialized in what was going wrong with me. I was impressed with this because it appeared to me that, I, the patient was the most important thing. Finally, the facilities where he worked were top-notch. This translated into spending less time there because I was able to get X-rays right away as opposed to spending time on an early Saturday to do so and then follow up with an additional visit to the doctor. I strongly recommend seeing Dr. Phen.
