About Dr. Steven Koehler
Steven M. Koehler MD, FAAOS, is an attending physician in Hand, Upper Limb & Microsurgery and Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery and Assistant Professor, Orthopedic Surgery at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Koehler treats pediatric patients only at this time. He has particular interest in wide awake surgery, congenital disorders, peripheral nerve surgery, the brachial plexus and upper limb reconstruction and reanimation. He also is one of the only hand surgeons in the TriState Area to specialize in free tissue transfer, and routinely performs lower and upper extremity limb salvage.
After receiving his Bachelor of Arts majoring in molecular biology from Colgate University in 2006, Dr. Koehler attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine, earning his Doctor of Medicine in 2011. He continued at Mount Sinai School of Medicine for his postdoctoral training, completing his residency in orthopedic surgery in 2016, acting as Administrative Chief Resident in his final year. He then pursued fellowship training in hand, upper extremity and microvascular surgery at Duke University Medical Center, one of the most prestigious fellowships in the country, completing it in 2017.
Dr. Koehler’s research focuses on upper extremity surgery. In addition to publishing more than 60 clinical and basic science research papers, he has also contributed chapters for multiple textbooks. He is a reviewer for several journals including the Journal of Hand Surgery, Injury and the European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology.
Dr. Koehler is board certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, with an additional subspecialty certification in surgery of the hand, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is an active member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Association for Hand Surgery, chairing and serving on multiple committees.

Dr. Koehler delivered excellent care for my wrist injury with unparalleled bedside manner and attention to my case. He ended up operating on my wrist and placing it in a cast, and now I'm completely back to normal activities including weightlifting with no pain at all. I believe Dr. Koehler is a master of his craft and truly cares about his patients in a way that other orthopedic surgeons do not.

I am so grateful that I found Dr. Koehler. I have had countless hand doctors throughout my life, and none that I was able to fully trust, because they never made me feel like they were actually listening to me or handled me with the care and empathy I needed. Dr. Koehler went above and beyond -- he didn't end our appointment til all of my concerns were addressed. I came in for a recent injury and he did such a comprehensive exam that he shone new light on some issues I've been having with my other arm/hand. Furthermore, the entire office was super kind and compassionate. I couldn't recommend this practice more.

Highly recommend Dr. Koehler. He did a Carpal Tunnel release on my left wrist/elbow 1 1/2 years ago. He explained the procedure thoroughly and the outcome. The surgery was done while I was awake on an outpatient basis. He also let me see my wrist after the incision during the procedure. Before I had the surgery, I was unable to use my left hand, my dominant hand, for anything. I was in so much pain and had no strength in it. Due to the severity of the carpal tunnel, he also had hand therapy added to my recovery. I can use my left hand again for everything and gained strength. Reason for my recent visit was that I was having issues again due to my office not having the proper chair so that my wrist/elbow would be in proper position to do my work so as to not reinjure it and require surgery again. He provided the documentation to have the equipment needed. I live in Staten Island and travelled to the Bronx- 2hrs. because of how he treated me as a patient and the outcome of my surgery.
