About Dr. Victoria Shanmugam

Victoria K. Shanmugam, MD, FACR, FACP, is Director of the Division of Rheumatology, and Associate Professor of Medicine at The George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates. A native of London, Dr. Shanmugam graduated with honors in Medicine from the Imperial College School of Medicine. She completed residencies at St. Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospitals and became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2002. After moving to Washington, DC, Dr. Shanmugam pursued further residency and fellowship training in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at Georgetown University. Dr. Shanmugam has an active clinical practice caring for patients with autoimmune diseases. She has several ongoing research studies including the WE-HEAL study which focuses on the interplay of the host immune response and the wound bed microbiome in patients with chronic wounds. Dr. Shanmugam has received numerous awards for her research, including an American College of Rheumatology Physician Scientist Development Award, the John Eisenberg Memorial Career Development Award and the C. Bertram Hoffberger Research Achievement Award. She was a KL2 scholar at the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, such as Current Opinion in Rheumatology, International Wound Journal and Clinical Rheumatology. Dr. Shanmugam is a member of several professional societies both in Great Britain and the United States, including the Royal College of Physicians, American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Rheumatology, as well the British Medical Association. She is certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.
