Getting to know Michael Mellett

Michael has over five years of experience working with individuals, families, and couples in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, and in-person/virtual outpatient clinics. Michael completed his Master of Social Work at Hunter College before beginning his career in the field of addiction and severe mental illness. Since then, he has gone on to expand his practice to attend to the vast array of suffering that people face, including anxiety, depression, cancer, chronic illness, life transitions, as well as family and relationship difficulties.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Michael understands that we sometimes need help with long-standing issues, and sometimes we seek help because we find ourselves blindsided and unsure where to turn. He believes that no matter what inspires us to seek help, doing so always requires courage; that psychotherapy asks us to be courageous but also curious and compassionate with ourselves in the hope that doing so can deepen our self-understanding, help us to find better ways to carry our pain, and ultimately allow us to live the lives we want to live.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Through integrative and psychoanalytic practice, Michael utilizes a wide breadth of treatment interventions tailored to the individual and to the moment. His practice is rooted in a greater recognition that we are embarking on a journey together, one which can be both joyful and challenging. “Therapy is a bit like sailing across the ocean: while we chart a course together, we don’t know what the ocean will throw at us along the path toward healing.”
