What should a new client know about working with you?

DISCLAIMER: not accepting Medicare or Medicaid plans at this time I often provide an eclectic approach to help clients meet their own individualistic needs. Though I primarily use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) interventions, I also consider an individual’s unique background, including their experiences, preferences, clinical needs, and cultural background to help identify the most beneficial approach for each individual.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process with working with clients includes an initial, semi-structured intake to gain as much background information on an individual as possible. During the intake process, I collaborate with the client to identify treatment goals and establish the most beneficial treatment plan for the individual moving forward. I meet clients where they are at in their journey of change and take careful consideration before challenging them to take the next steps in their journey. Though I share clinical recommendations, I collaborate with client’s along their treatment journey, to ensure that they receive the flexibility they need, while simultaneously working towards their treatment goals.

Look she isn’t a bad clinician. She does however have a flat affect that does not engage in dark humor or other basic attempts of mine to connect through a really difficult topic. What really bothered me is that she conducted an intake asking about hospitalizations, other treatments, and intimate details of my illness only to, at the end of the session, tell me the next time she could see me was in 2 months (in person) or in a month (virtual). She justified it with only two in office days weekly but that doesn’t explain over an hour delay for virtual. Had she said this at the beginning of the appointment I would have respectfully thanked her for her time but said if her schedule was so full she couldn’t meet weekly (a common therapeutic expectation) I was not interested in trying to explain the trauma of my previous experiences with mental illness. I received no treatment and instead recited the worst parts of my history to someone who made no attempt to connect.
