William Martinez, LCSW

William Martinez, LCSW

Psychotherapist
CA
A bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker who brings over 20 years of experience of working with individuals, families and couples who are suffering or who are feeling “stuck” in life. William works alongside people to help them manage or resolve depression, anxiety, trauma and interpersonal problems. His education and training take root in understanding one’s capacity to regulate emotions within the everyday challenges and struggles of life. Whether your interpersonal challenges began as a result of trauma, abuse or challenges with regulating your emotions, William offers an environment where you can be heard non-judgmentally in an attempt to better understand your emotions, thoughts and behaviors; to learn new skills; and to explore whether change or acceptance will alleviate your pain and help you move forward. As early as college, William received a bachelor’s degree in conflict management, which inevitably helped him understand fundamentals principles in problem solving and conflict resolution as a way to increase safety in communities. This provided him with a deeper understanding of how people cope with stress in the context of their social environment, communities and society, to live a life worth living. He believes that therapy is a place to gain more awareness and perspective, and to recognize one’s strengths to help them overcome difficult transitions in life (death, unexpected changes, and family crises). Ultimately, he believes that successful treatment involves learning new ways of interacting with people that result in positive outcomes and gaining tools to better accept or change the undesirables’ realities of life which could cause suffering.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach consists of working alongside you to help you overcome difficult periods in life. I do this through use of evidenced based, yet realistic and practical approaches that will help you in your path of reaching your long term goals. I have certification and training in the Gottman Method (Couples), Family Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Cognitive Behavior Therapy. I use these treatments as a framework to help you gain progress. I welcome you to a free consultation, to discuss your needs and to identify a plan for recovery.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Through the process of therapy, we can explore the core of your depression, grief, anxiety, trauma, or interpersonal conflicts. I provide a supportive and engaging environment and engage clients through a reflective process to increase awareness of their behaviors and their environment, aid their coping with loss, and support them to accept situations that they are not able to change. In individual and couples counseling, we will discuss your needs and goals at length, including the function of your undesired behaviors or ineffective patterns between you and your partner. It is through this process that we discover more effective behaviors and the interventions necessary to increase support and enhance relationships. This may include the integration of new styles of communication, which will reduce arguing and increase problem-solving behavior as well as enhance positive connections. Similar to individual therapy, we will develop treatment goals and reevaluate treatment every 3 months to determine if we are effectively meeting your partnership goals. During our first session, I will introduce to you the structure of therapy. This includes guiding you through the various treatments and interventions that we may use, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and the Gottman Method. During this initial phase, we focus on developing a trusting relationship, to allow us to identify a path and treatment approach. Individual and couple's therapy consists of telehealth or in-person sessions, typically at a frequency of one time per week.
