These doctors receive acute and chronic care training through residency or fellowship training to help the community with comprehensive primary care services. Patients can reach them in clinics, long-term care facilities, private practices, outpatient hospitals, inpatient hospitals, and group practices.

What conditions do primary care doctors treat?

Primary care doctors can typically provide comprehensive care to people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. Some common conditions treated by them include:

  1. Hypertension
  2. Upper respiratory tract issues like asthma
  3. Arthritis
  4. Mental health issues like depression and anxiety
  5. Fever
  6. Severe headaches like migraine
  7. Dehydration or fatigue
  8. Abdominal pains or related symptoms
  9. Allergic reactions
  10. Cold and flu

What are the qualifications of a primary care doctor?

To become a licensed, board-certified primary care physician, a medical aspirant must follow the following path:

  • Earn an undergraduate degree in pre-med or any other science course from an accredited school.
  • Graduate in medicine or osteopathic medicine from an accredited medical school.
  • Pass the first and second steps of the examination conducted by the United States Medical Licensing (USMLE) or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination of the United States (COMLEX-USA).
  • Complete the residency program with the required rotations in specialist departments.
  • Become board-certified after passing the American Board of Family Medicine or the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians exams.
  • Pass level 3 of the COMLEX-USA or the USMLE exam to obtain state-specific licensure.

What areas can primary care doctors specialize in?

A wide variety of subspecialist doctors provide primary care. Here's a quick rundown of how these experts differ from one another:

  • General practitioners or family doctors: These doctors see patients of all ages. They have expertise in treating patients across various areas, from infants to older adults.
  • Internists: They are medical professionals who focus on adult health. They are similar to family doctors as they can also handle short-term and long-term issues. Due to their extensive education, which includes learning about endocrinology, rheumatology, neurology, orthopedics, geriatrics, and rehabilitation, they can cater to diverse healthcare needs.
  • Pediatricians: They are medical experts who specialize in caring for infants, children, and adolescents (up to the age of 21) by promoting their health and development and treating any resulting medical issues. Although many pediatricians serve as primary care physicians for children, some choose to focus on subspecialties like pediatric neurology or pediatric cardiology.
  • Geriatricians: Physicians who focus on caring for older people are called geriatricians. Their specialized training makes them efficient at treating conditions like sleeplessness, dementia, and balance disorders.
  • OB-GYNs: Doctors who focus on women's health and have completed further education and training in obstetrics and gynecology are called obstetrician-gynecologists (OB-GYNs). Some OB-GYNs focus solely on female reproductive health, while others offer a wide range of general medical services akin to an internist or family doctor.
  • Nurse practitioners (NP) or physician assistants (PA): They provide care in various settings where patient support may be necessary. In many underserved areas where doctors may be scarce, these practitioners often shoulder the burden of offering primary care to the entire community.

Why should you visit a primary care doctor near you?

Primary care doctors are health managers who can meet most of your health needs. They are trained to handle a broad aspect of healthcare, like managing diabetes and weight, offering diet guidance, monitoring vaccination schedules, and attending to common health issues like flu, fever, and injury management.

The following are some of the reasons to visit a primary care doctor:

  • Routine screenings: Primary care doctors recommend regular testing for health problems like colon cancer, breast cancer, and diabetes. Routine screening can help detect such conditions timely manner.
  • Annual physicals: Primary care doctors consistently review their patients' health status through an examination every year. This helps them track the progression of existing conditions and prevent the possibility of contracting new ones.
  • Everyday illnesses: Health concerns like ear infections, strep throat, and skin rashes are all within the scope of primary care doctors. Going to the same doctor for acute illnesses could help the doctor identify patterns that might connect various symptoms and point to a common cause.
  • Vaccinations: Primary care doctors set and administer regular annual vaccination schedules for children and adults. They can also book services like flu shots.
  • Referrals: When an individual has a problem that requires specialized care and attention, the primary care doctor will refer them to a trusted specialist. Studies show that over one-third of patients in the nation are directed to a specialist annually by their primary care doctor.
  • Smoking cessation: Primary care doctors can help individuals quit smoking through counseling, medication, and nicotine replacement therapy.
  • Chronic illness management: Heart disease, depression, diabetes, and other long-term issues can have severe consequences if left unchecked. A primary care doctor could be the best ally in controlling and managing these health issues.

Difference between emergency rooms and primary care clinics

An emergency room (ER) is typically part of a hospital or medical center designed to treat patients experiencing emergencies or trauma. On the other hand, primary care treats non-life-threatening problems.

ERs operate 24/7, providing comprehensive emergency medical support and resources on a walk-in basis. You should always get emergency care for severe, life-threatening conditions. Call 9-1-1 or go to the ER immediately in case you or someone else experiences symptoms such as chest pains, signs of a heart attack or stroke, seizures, loss of consciousness, abdominal pain, head injury or pain, poisoning, choking or difficulty breathing, open fractures, severe cuts, burns, uncontrollable bleeding, or fever in elderly individuals or young children.

Difference between urgent care and primary care

Urgent care clinics offer same-day appointments to treat non-life-threatening health conditions requiring immediate medical attention. Unlike primary care clinics, which typically see patients from Monday to Friday during regular business hours, urgent care clinics provide services after hours, on weekends, and on holidays.

While it is always best to make an appointment with your primary care doctor first, urgent care is a suitable option for non-emergency conditions when your primary care doctor isn't available. These conditions include upper respiratory problems such as sore throat, earache, sinus symptoms, and non-life-threatening allergic reactions. Urgent care clinics also treat minor skin infections, rashes, burns, insect bites, minor animal or human bites, urinary tract infections, and minor cuts, contusions, or abrasions.

Primary care in Indiana and the United States

Primary care is integral to a high-performing healthcare system in the U.S. In 2022, the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis reported that there were 279,194 actively practicing primary care physicians in the United States, representing 29.9% of all active physicians. This statistic underscores the vital role that primary care providers play in maintaining public health. However, the data also reveals concerning trends; between 2016 and 2021, the growth in the number of primary care physicians was about 3.6%, while other medical specialties saw an increase of approximately 8.7% during the same timeframe. This disparity suggests that primary care is not keeping pace with the broader expansion of the healthcare sector. The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) cautions that if this trend continues, the U.S. could face a shortage of between 21,100 and 55,200 primary care doctors by 2032.

According to the Bowen Center for Health Workforce Research and Policy, in 2023, Indiana had over 6,420 primary care physicians. The most common specialties among these practitioners include family/general medicine, which comprised approximately 47.1%, and internal medicine, accounting for around 31%. Notably, over 71% of these physicians provided telemedicine services, while nearly 23% offered addiction treatment services.

Primary care physicians are essential in managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, and asthma. According to America's Health Rankings, in 2023, approximately 13.2% of Indiana's adult population had been diagnosed with diabetes, excluding gestational diabetes and prediabetes. This rate is above the national average of 11.5%. A breakdown of the data shows that the diagnosis rate for diabetes was lower among men (12.5%) compared to women (13.8%). Furthermore, the prevalence of diabetes was significantly higher among individuals aged 65 and older (25.8%) compared to those aged 45 to 64 (17.3%) and those aged 18 to 44 (3.8%).
