Getting to know Alan Oxman

In my psychotherapy practice, I strive to create a safe and supportive environment for individuals to explore painful and troubling feelings, identify goals, and develop strategies for coping with difficult emotions and circumstances. I believe that the awareness and insight developed through therapy allow people to be better connected to themselves, more engaged in their relationships, and more present in the world around them. I take an active role in therapy sessions and work with my clients in ways that challenge them to achieve their personal goals. I have worked with individuals and couples struggling with addiction, anxiety, depression, and stress. In addition, I help people with difficult childhood and family experiences, including trauma, domestic violence, relationship issues, and transitions, who are searching for emotional connection with others as well as a strong sense of self. My therapeutic style is supportive and interactive; working collaboratively, I tailor treatment to each unique individual. My approach is informed by my training in psychoanalysis and cognitive behavioral theories (CBT). I hold a Doctor of Social Work from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and a Master's in Social Work from New York University.

I have seen a few therapists over the years and wanted to see someone new to deal with a painful breakup. He quickly understood why I came to see him and helped me connect some dots in my first session. He is compassionate but focused. More than anything I felt like he was confident in his ability to help me through a difficult time. He's clearly an experienced therapist and I feel I am in good hands.
I could really tell that Dr. Oxman cared and didn’t judge. The office space is really relaxing and his demeanor is very inviting and comforting. I highly recommend.

Dr. Oxman has done great work with our teenage son who suffers from depression and anxiety. My wife, son, and I respect him greatly.
I feel very lucky to have found Alan. I've been living in Brooklyn for two years and had not found a therapist to match the one I had in Austin before I moved. Alan gives me practical life advice, does not just sit silently staring at me. He remembers everything I tell him, is fully engaged with me, and never makes me feel rushed through my time with him. He meets me where I am on any given day - intellectually and emotionally, with both practical suggestions and profound thoughts. I always feel better after I see him.
Dr. Oxman was an enormous help to me after going through some rough times due to losses. He helped me to help myself in dealing with and understanding how to successfully address my issues. I would highly recommend him as a bright, compassionate and understanding therapist.
I can't say enough about the experience that I have had working with Dr. Oxman. Finding a therapist at such a critical time in my life was clearly so important and I feel so fortunate that I chose him. He has a unique combination of intelligence, warmth, and deep life knowledge. Even though I have moved away, I still call for phone sessions.
We've been seeing him for couples therapy for three months now and from the first session he was able to address major issues and make us feel completely comfortable to discuss anything. He takes control of the conversation and asks very concise quesitons that enable him to gain insights about his patients. We are now really listening to each other and falling in love again. I can't speak highly enough of Dr. Oxman. I truly encourage you to work with him.
I originally saw Alan because of a messy breakup I was going through - not only was he incredible in terms of helping me work my way through the complicated emotions that came out of that, but he's been remarkably helpful and instructive in helping me move forward in general. Alan takes the time to get to know you, listens thoughtfully, and remembers details from stories you've shared that show he cares about you as a person and about what you've said in your sessions.
