Andy Chan, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NY
Hi there, I'm Andy! I am a first-generation Asian-American Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in NYC and have experience working in a variety of clinical settings, including outpatient substance use programs, harm-reduction clinics, acute care hospitals, large non-profits, in addition to private practice. I’ve supported individuals and couples navigating life challenges, whether it’s feeling overwhelmed by the ups and downs of everyday life, feeling disconnected from themselves and the life they want to create, or feeling stuck and uncertain about the next steps in life. My approach In my practice, I view the client-therapist relationship to be of utmost importance. My approach is warm, nonjudgmental, and grounded in evidence-based care. I draw from several evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and traditional psychodynamic talk therapy. Truth is, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to most things in life, and your therapeutic experience shouldn’t be either. My focus I frequently work with adults who are managing anxiety, major life transitions, and those who are seeking support for self-esteem issues. Our work will primarily focus on developing healthy coping skills by identifying maladaptive behaviors that aren't working and reinforcing positive behaviors that are working. My communication style Therapy shouldn't be a scary or stressful endeavor - you're taking a huge chance at wanting to change something in your life, so why not approach it together in stride and with optimism and hope? I prioritize clear and open communication to create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. I practice active listening and will give you opportunities to reflect on your experiences. I also incorporate aspects of humor, analogies/metaphors, and social context in my therapy approach.
