“Working with Dishen has been one of the few experiences where I genuinely felt safe enough to slow down and be honest about what I was feeling. She has a very calming and grounding presence, and I never feel judged or rushed in our sessions. Somehow she creates a space where even difficult emotions feel easier to sit with and understand.”

Getting to know Dishen Zhang

Dishen is a bilingual (English/Mandarin) therapist who works with adolescents, adults, couples, and families navigating relationship struggles, anxiety, depression, trauma, identity questions, and major life transitions. Originally from Henan, China, Dishen earned her undergraduate degree in Applied Psychology in China and then completed her Master’s degree in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness at New York University. Prior to joining With Me Psychotherapy, she worked across university counseling centers, mental health hotlines, private practice settings, and comprehensive health clinics. She maintains a strong interest in emerging perspectives on the mind-body connection and emotional processing.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me is less about following a fixed method and more about building a genuine, trusting relationship over time. I tend to approach therapy with curiosity and care, creating a space where you don’t have to have everything figured out, and where all parts of your experience are welcome. I am comfortable working with strong emotions, relational struggles, and moments that feel overwhelming or hard to make sense of. Rather than trying to “fix” or push things to change quickly, I focus on understanding what is happening beneath the surface, and supporting you in reconnecting with yourself in a way that feels meaningful and sustainable. Clients often find that our work is not just about solving a specific problem, but about developing a different way of relating to themselves and their experiences.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In a typical session, we begin by checking in on what feels most present for you—this could be something that happened recently, an ongoing situation, or a feeling that has been difficult to make sense of. From there, we follow what feels most meaningful, rather than adhering to a strict structure. Some sessions may focus on talking through experiences and patterns in your life or relationships, while others may involve slowing down and paying closer attention to your emotional or bodily responses in the moment. I may offer reflections, questions, or observations to help deepen your awareness. Over time, this process often leads to a deeper understanding of recurring patterns and opens space for new ways of experiencing and responding, both within yourself and in your relationships.

I started therapy with Dishen during a really uncertain and transitional period in my life, and I’m very grateful I found her. She created a space where I felt genuinely understood, never judged or rushed, and helped me notice deeper patterns. I especially appreciated her calm, grounded presence and how emotionally attuned and culturally aware she was as an Asian therapist. Even though our work together was relatively short-term, it was genuinely impactful, and I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a thoughtful and compassionate therapist.
