Getting to know Kevin Goldwater

Hello! I'm a psychotherapist providing high-quality, effective trauma-informed and culturally affirmative care in New York and New Jersey. *Please note - appointments made on ZocDoc are for initial consults only - we'll chat, hear more about you and my work to make sure we're a fit to get you the best care possible.* As an experienced therapist, I create a warm, supportive environment where curiosity, creativity, and humor guide my work. My mission is to provide a space where you feel understood, supported, and empowered to heal and grow. I use an integrative approach, blending psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness, trauma-informed care, and queer theory to tailor our sessions to your unique needs. Whether you're dealing with past trauma, life transitions, or seeking personal growth, I offer a safe, non-judgmental space for exploration and healing. My trauma-informed approach ensures that your journey is both sensitive and effective, empowering you to create lasting change. Alongside my private practice, I teach as an Adjunct Professor at NYU Steinhardt and continue my professional development at the Psychoanalytic Institute of New York. If you're ready to begin your healing journey with a compassionate, trauma-informed therapist, I encourage you to reach out today.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When you come to therapy, you may be feeling sadness, loneliness, or exhaustion. Life’s challenges may feel overwhelming, or perhaps everything seems chaotic and confusing. My goal is to help you make sense of these emotions and guide you toward a more peaceful, balanced life. I approach therapy through a trauma-informed lens, ensuring that your unique experiences and challenges are met with sensitivity and care. Whether you're navigating issues related to identity, relationships, or past trauma, I am here to provide a compassionate, non-judgmental space for exploration and healing. Think of our work together as a journey: we’ll start by exploring your past experiences, gain insight into where you are now, and create a plan for where you’d like to go. Together, we’ll examine old patterns, process past experiences, and work toward building a path to a more fulfilling and authentic future. I believe that the relationship between therapist and client is central to the healing process. With compassion, energy, and curiosity, I will meet you where you are, creating a supportive environment where you can express yourself honestly and openly. My goal is to help you feel truly understood, valued, and empowered as you take steps toward healing and personal growth

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our sessions will be grounded in psychodynamic therapy — which means we’ll explore how your past and present experiences shape how you feel, relate, and respond today. I integrate somatic work, parts work, and trauma-informed care to ensure that therapy is attuned to your needs in the moment, not just the narrative. We'll collaborate to identify your goals and move toward change at a pace that feels sustainable and empowering. For some, this means resolving long-standing patterns. For others, it means creating a more connected, authentic relationship with themselves and others. Clients I work with often report greater clarity, emotional balance, and a deeper sense of self-understanding. Therapy is a process, and we’ll walk it together — with intention, depth, and compassion.

So happy I found this practice and my therapist. It was easy to get started and they've been incredibly accommodating with my schedule and billing needs! More importantly, my therapist is knowledgeable, patient, kind and empathic - I'd be lost without him!!
I've been seeing Kevin Goldwater through Embodied Mind for several years now, and would highly recommend it. The intake process was much easier than with other companies I had tried, and Kevin was much more relatable and understanding than most counsellors I have found. He's always on time, flexible with schedules, and an excellent professional to talk to.
Great mental health talk therapy. My mental health is better than it's been in many years; I can trace the upswing to right around the time that I began therapy with Kevin. Truly a healer
