Getting to know Mariam Rahyab

Mariam Rahyab, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and current doctoral student at New York University. She provides virtual psychotherapy through the cognitive behavioral therapy practice of Travis Tanner, LCSW. Mariam’s expertise in clinical practice and research focuses on coping with burnout, identity development, relationship stress and intergenerational and immigration trauma. As a woman of color and the daughter of immigrants, Mariam brings a deep understanding of how cultural context, family history, and lived experiences shape mental health. Mariam specializes in assessing and treating trauma-related conditions, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, intergenerational stress, and identity-based concerns. She uses a client-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally grounded approach that honors each person’s strengths, resilience, and unique story. Her work integrates evidence-based practices, including CBT, trauma-focused CBT, mindfulness-based interventions and culturally responsive care, while prioritizing safety, collaboration, and empowerment. Mariam strives to create a therapeutic space where clients feel affirmed, understood, and supported as they navigate healing and personal growth.

What should a new client know about working with you?

**Initial appointments begin with a free consultation phone call with our intake coordinator.** On this call, you’ll review insurance details, ask questions, and get a sense of whether our practice is the right fit. If so, you can schedule your first therapy appointment directly during that call. As a therapist, I deeply value your lived experience, cultural background, and personal strengths. My approach is collaborative; I walk alongside you as you process painful experiences, challenge unhelpful patterns, and reconnect with parts of yourself that may have been overlooked or silenced. I work from a trauma-informed, anti-racist and culturally humble lens. As a clinician of color, I understand how identity, faith, migration, and systemic inequities shape mental health and healing. My work blends evidence-based practices like CBT with an appreciation for the cultural, spiritual, and familial influences that inform who you are. I aim to create a therapy space where you can express yourself openly, feel deeply seen and heard, and explore your story at your own pace. I believe humor, warmth, and authenticity can coexist with serious healing work, and I welcome all parts of you into the room. Together, we’ll build a path toward resilience, meaning, and self-empowerment.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

**Your first step is a free consultation call with our intake coordinator** who will walk you through insurance, answer questions, and help schedule your initial session if it feels like a good fit. During our first therapy session, you can expect a warm, grounding space where we begin building trust and safety. We’ll explore your story, your current concerns and your goals for therapy. This information helps me understand not only what brought you to therapy, but also the strengths and resources you already carry. Our initial sessions focus on understanding your goals, identifying patterns connected to trauma or stress, and co-creating a treatment plan that integrates CBT and trauma-informed strategies. We will proceed at a pace that feels right for you, ensuring that you feel emotionally safe and supported throughout the process. Over time, our work will include a combination of insight-building, skill-building and practical tools to help you navigate daily life, whether that involves grounding techniques, CBT exercises, cultural identity exploration, or processing traumatic memories when you feel ready. Each step is collaborative. My goal is for you to leave therapy with a clearer sense of self, strengthened coping strategies, and a renewed connection to hope, resilience, and purpose.
