Melissa White, LMSW

Psychotherapist
NY
Welcome! I offer gender affirming and trauma-informed care to adults and college-age young adults who are struggling with various mood and adjustment issues. We do not choose the families, countries, or systems that we are born into, and yet so much of our interior lives are deeply shaped by these uncommon inheritances. It takes courage to heal within environmental dynamics that are not in our control. I am committed to partnering with you as you continue to craft a life worth living in uncertain times. As a sociologist and social worker by training, I support clients who are navigating intimacy, identity, and life transitions, while healing from interpersonal and/or institutional narcissism and other forms of trauma. My specialization is in relational psychodynamic approaches, and I draw on a range of treatment modalities to co-create a therapeutic alliance with the clients who entrust me with their care. Over the last 20 years, I have mentored dozens of college-age students as they navigate the developmental transition into adulthood. My background in higher education as a faculty member and researcher who specializes in gender, sexuality, and migration studies deeply informs my more recent turn to clinical social work. My clients value my ability to facilitate the co-creation of a therapeutic alliance. To explore our therapeutic fit, please reach out with note of introduction to schedule brief phone consult. I’m currently accepting new clients on waitlist and look forward to hearing from you..

What should a new client know about working with you?

I bring a compassionate and lively approach to the interpersonal work of therapy. I enjoy the process of co-creating a therapeutic alliance with each client as a foundational aspect of the work ahead.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I employ a range of evidence-based practices to help guide my clients as they journey toward greater authenticity. I emphasize a holistic approach to assist clients navigating though the difficulties and opportunities that are influencing their lives at any given time. My practice emphasizes the interconnectedness of mind, body, thought, emotion, action, and desire, as each is informed and transformed by past and present significant relationships. Attachment patterns, trauma, strength, and motivation are but a few facets of the unique weave of each client’s life. I see my role as partnering with clients as they integrate past experiences with their hopes and aims for the future, while taking seriously the constraints imposed by the environment (broadly conceived) at any given time.
