Getting to know Rachel Tan

Hello, I'm glad you're here! Therapy with me is warm, authentic, and laid-back. It's a space where you can start getting unstuck, cultivate curiosity and compassion, and listen gently to your mind, body, and heart. We'll help you slow down from life's chaos, deepen your relationship with yourself and others, and live with more clarity and intention. I believe that therapy is more than just learning how to cope – it's about experiencing lasting transformation and healing, and I'm here by your side through both the messiness and the growth. I specialize in working with Asian Americans, children of immigrants, individuals navigating two or more cultures, and women of color. I have supported people with anxiety, intergenerational and complex trauma, family and relationship difficulties, self-esteem issues, shame, and identity exploration. Overall, I enjoy working with people who are eager to learn more about themselves, feel more connected with others, and explore mental wellness through a systemic and anti-oppressive lens. I received my Master of Social Work from Columbia University, and I am a culturally-responsive and LGBTQIA+-affirming clinician. If any of this resonates with you, I encourage you to schedule an appointment so we can get to know each other and get started towards your therapeutic goals. I would be honored to go on this journey with you!

What should a new client know about working with you?

I bring compassion, curiosity, and calm to our conversations, since I know that beginning therapy can feel intimidating and vulnerable. Whether we're mending past wounds, processing big emotions, or engaging in self-discovery, I welcome you as not just the challenges you face but as a whole person. Together, we'll bring your voice to the forefront of our conversations and explore what feels meaningful to you. We'll work collaboratively to help you feel lighter and more connected with your strengths, authenticity, and deeper self.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I incorporate a mix of relational and experiential therapies, meaning that our sessions go beyond just talking. We'll use hands-on approaches that engage the mind-body-heart connection, emphasize the value of human relationships (including ours!), and meet your "unwanted" parts with openness and compassion. Our work will be grounded in connection, mindfulness, and embodied healing.

From our first session I felt very welcomed by Rachel. I was so nervous starting with a new therapist but she made it very easy to open up to her and be honest. She also provided helpful feedback and questions for me, which helped me see things from new perspectives and learn a lot about myself.
Rachel helped me to not just feel understood … but also to heal my depression and inner child! I could always tell she wanted to help and is passionate about providing therapy. She's just marvelous and I'm so so grateful for all we did together.
I absolutely loved having Rachel as my therapist. She helped me so much with navigating family conflicts, cultural differences, and self-esteem issues. I'm glad to have found someone who deeply understood my circumstances and empathized with me, and made therapy feel like teamwork instead of a chore. She has played such a key role in my growth and healing, and I'll always remember the skills and lessons I learned from her!
If you are looking for an empathetic, insightful and warm therapist, I would absolutely recommend Rachel! The progress I made during our short time together was amazing - and I couldn't have done it without her.
I found Rachel when I felt very stuck in toxic cycles, and she helped me get out of that. The way she approaches therapy is flexible but intentional, and structured but I also got to choose what I wanted to talk about
Really, really thankful I started seeing Rachel during a difficult transition in my life. Every week I looked forward to our appointments because it felt like a breath of fresh air. She made it clear that she really cared and wanted the best for me. She is super smart but also down-to-earth, kind, and funny!
I had a really positive experience with Rachel! I saw tangible progress while working with her, which was my first time experiencing real change with any therapist. She asks such thoughtful questions and achieves a great balance of challenging and affirming you. I'm definitely a more self-compassionate, authentic, and curious person because of tools she taught me and how she modeled these positive traits in our conversations.
Rachel makes every session a safe space where I never feel judged. She listens intently, and you can tell she truly cares about what you're saying and wants to help. She is a wonderful therapist, and I feel more grounded and confident in myself as a result of our time together.
Rachel is very attentive and has a great memory! She makes me feel very heard but also appropriately challenges me. She is patient when I talk about things that we didn’t intend on talking about for that session, and always reminds me to think about my goals for the next week. Rachel has been very helpful with guiding me through ways to manage my anxiety and depression.
Rachel is actually one of the best therapists I have worked with so far. She is intelligent, insightful, and pushes me to think outside the box in ways I have not been able to before. I feel that I am better at managing and naming my emotions.
